The experience
The tour starts with hotel pickup in Puerto Madryn and a one-hour drive through Patagonian landscapes to Puerto Pirámides, the gateway to Peninsula Valdes National Park. Once there, you board a boat for the marine portion: between June and December, the cruise focuses on whale watching. From January through March, the same waters show sea lions and coastal birds instead. The boat is the centerpiece of the morning, and timing matters: the season you travel determines what you see.
After the cruise, the tour moves to Punta Delgada and the Punta Pirámides Seal Farm, where you can walk among a breeding colony of one-hair sea lions and take in panoramic views from the viewpoints. The route then heads to Punta Cantor to observe the peninsula's outer coast, the geographical feature of Caleta Valdés, and the elephant seal colonies. You'll walk trails that let you see the seals up close and examine the geological formations that shape the coastline. Lunch is not included, but there's a stop at Complejo El Faro (open after Easter through August 31) where you can eat and access a private beach. When El Faro is closed, the lunch stop moves to Pyramid Cove without beach access.
The return journey retraces Istmo Ameghino and arrives back in Puerto Madryn at sunset. Your guide speaks both English and Spanish throughout, and hotel drop-off is included. The entire day runs about eleven hours from pickup to return.
