The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Mendoza hotel and heads north into the Villavicencio Reserve on a gravel mountain road. You stop at two viewpoints on the climb up, each one higher than the last, to watch the Precordillera unfold beneath you. At the Cruz de Paramillos (the highest point of the first range) the panorama opens to the Cordón del Plata and the Andes beyond. The Balcón de Villavicencio comes next, a stone formation that looks like a dry waterfall frozen mid-collapse. Along the entire route, guanacos, foxes and Andean condors move through the landscape. You see them when they appear, not on a schedule.
From the reserve you descend to Uspallata for a coffee stop and facilities, then continue to Puente del Inca: a natural bridge carved by water and colored in shades that shift with the light. After time to photograph it, the route climbs again toward Aconcagua Provincial Park. Here you do a short, easy hike to a viewpoint of Aconcagua's south face, the highest mountain on the entire continent, rising above everything around it. The return follows Route 7 back through Uspallata, where the deluxe picnic happens: local cheeses, cured meats, bread and Mendocino wine, eaten in the open air before the final drive back to your hotel.
