The experience
The day starts with pickup at 8am from your Mendoza hotel and a two-hour drive south along La Carrera, a mountain road that climbs to 2,000 meters elevation where the Andes foothills meet Valle de Uco. The rivers here are fast-flowing mountain creeks fed by snowmelt, narrow enough that you fish from the bank without waders, casting for rainbow and brown trout that move through the cold water year-round. September through April brings the best conditions, though the streams stay fishable in every season.
At 2pm the guide brings you to the ranch for a full Argentine asado: multiple cuts of beef, kid goat and chicken roasted with vegetables, served with salads and fine wines from the region. Vegetarian dishes are available if you request them at booking. After lunch and coffee, you return to the river for the afternoon session, fishing until the light starts to fade. The drive back to Mendoza takes two hours, arriving around 6pm.
A live guide in English, Spanish or Portuguese stays with you throughout, handling the logistics and pointing out the wildlife: desert fox, distant puma and condors are regular sightings in these isolated valleys. All fly rods, flies and tackle come with the package, along with snacks and drinks during the day. Wear long pants, a long-sleeve shirt and sturdy shoes. Sunglasses are essential at this elevation.
