The experience

The route starts the afternoon before in Capilla del Monte, where you arrive at cabins at the foot of the hill for a roast dinner and folk music. The next morning you leave along the Toro Trail toward the Los Alazanes levee, crossing the Calabalumba River twelve times through native bushland and mountain range fauna. The second day climbs to the northwest viewpoint of Uritorco at 1,980 meters, where the panorama opens across the Punilla Valley, Totoral and the Salinas Grandes. The third day descends along the valley edges to Ongamira, passing the Quebrada de Luna, Los Terrones and the Grottos of Ongamira (a sacred site of the native peoples) before a short closing ride on the last day.

You sleep in real mountain shelters with beds and hot water every night, no tents. Each evening closes with regional food, a stove and guitar. The horses are Creole breeding stock trained on-site and dressed for the saddle by the operation itself. The cowboys choose each one to fit your size and the terrain ahead. Rides run 4 to 5 hours daily. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included, along with wifi in the shelters, a satellite telephone for emergencies and a support van that travels with the group.

The operation is the only one authorized to travel this road to Cerro Uritorco, crossing six private fields that no other operator reaches. Groups stay small, and guides speak English and Spanish. Children are welcome from age 10.
