The experience
Ghardaia sits at the heart of the M'zab Valley, a UNESCO world heritage site built around five distinct villages, each with its own ksar (fortified settlement) and its own rhythm. This tour strings them together in a single day, starting with El Atteuf, where the Mzabite people first settled in 1020 and where palmeraies still frame the old town behind them. From there you move through the narrow passageways, past the distinctive minarets, to the 700-year-old mosque of Shikh Sidi Brahim, then on to Ksar Ghardaia itself, the pearl of the oases, where a great mosque sits at the center of everything, the focal point around which the whole city is organized.
Beni Isguen, the most enigmatic of the five, is where the day becomes a navigation puzzle: you wind through maze-like streets, past wells and under archways, to reach a small whitewashed building and climb to the watchtower for a view out over the town. The tour ends at the Criée, the liveliest market square, set on the outskirts and open daily just after the Asr prayer (closed Fridays). This is where locals buy and where you can pick up goods and souvenirs. Your guide speaks English, French or Arabic, handles all entrance fees, and arranges the transfers between villages, so you walk only what the itinerary covers.
The tour is mostly walking (expect narrow, steep streets and uneven ground), and runs 7 to 8 hours. Book at least 48 hours ahead to confirm availability. If you need a tourist visa, contact the operator a month before your departure date. Vegetarian meals can be arranged if you request them at booking.

Book this if you want to explore the M'zab Valley's architecture and layout with someone who knows the ksar layout and can answer questions as you walk.
