The experience

The tour starts at Algiers airport with pickup and transfer to your hotel. Day one covers the city itself: the corniche where locals picnic, the crowded center, and the famous streets running from Isley to the Place of Martyrs. You stay near the capital that night and move into the Casbah the next day, walking through the old city's mosques, palaces, artisan quarters and fountains. The itinerary also includes a cathedral built in 1872 in French-Algerian collaboration, and a structure dating to 1612 with notable architecture.

Day three takes the road toward Constantine via Djemila, where you spend around three hours at the Roman site. Built by the emperor Nerva in 96 AD, Djemila holds a theater, market and bath from the first century, plus a museum with mosaics and statues. Lunch happens on-site before the journey continues to Constantine, where you check into a 4- or 3-star hotel. The remaining days explore Constantine itself: one of the world's highest bridges, a walking bridge with views across the city on both sides, a monument to Algerian soldiers from World War 1, a palace that survives from the Ottoman period, and a French-built structure with a Quranic school beneath it. The tour also includes a Roman site carved into the rocks and a modern mosque.

A licensed guide in English or French travels with the group throughout. Transport is by comfortable bus, and all fees, taxes and hotel stays are covered. The pace is moderate. The itinerary assumes you can walk and stand for periods of time, and families traveling with infants (who sit on an adult's lap) are welcome.
