You’ll ride through Berat’s olive-covered hills in a 4x4, meet real winemakers in Malinat village, and taste local wines right where they’re made. If you want to see authentic Albanian countryside—and drink good wine with friendly locals—this is your trip.
The air smelled faintly of wild herbs as we bounced along the dirt roads outside Berat, our 4x4 kicking up little clouds of dust behind us. Olive trees lined the hills, their silvery leaves shimmering in the morning sun. Our driver didn’t speak much English, but he grinned and pointed out a shepherd leading his goats through the fields—something you just don’t see every day back home.
After about an hour weaving through these rolling hills, we pulled up to Malinat village. You can spot the vineyards from a distance—rows and rows stretching across the landscape. The Hadaj family was waiting for us at their winery, Kantina Vila Hadaj. Their youngest daughter handed us tiny glasses of homemade raki before we even sat down. Inside, it felt like time slowed down: old photos on the wall, the smell of fermenting grapes, and a table set with fresh bread and local cheese.
We tasted three different wines—each one had its own story. Our guide explained how this area’s rocky soil gives their reds a special kick (I’m no expert, but you could taste it). Between sips, we nibbled on olives and chatted about village life. Turns out, some of these vines have been here longer than most of the houses. It’s not just a tasting; it’s more like being welcomed into someone’s home for an afternoon.
Kids are welcome for the ride and snacks, but only guests 18+ can join the wine tasting due to local laws.
No special gear needed—just comfortable shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dusty from the off-road ride.
