What’s included

Your day includes bottled water for the trek, an English-speaking local guide who shares stories along the way, lunch in Lao Chai village with traditional dishes, and a car ride back up to Sapa after visiting Ta Van—so you won’t have to climb all those hills again on foot.

“Rice grows where patience lives,” our guide Linh said as she pointed at the terraces curling around Hoang Lien Son’s feet. I’d never seen so many shades of green in one place. The air was damp—sort of sweet, actually—and you could hear chickens somewhere, but not see them. We started our trek from Sapa early, boots already muddy before we’d even left the edge of town. Linh walked ahead in her indigo skirt, waving now and then to women carrying baskets or kids darting between the bamboo.

The walk down to Lao Chai village wasn’t hard but it was slippery—my friend nearly lost a shoe in the mud (she still laughs about it). We passed a group of Hmong women weaving brocade by the path; their hands moved so fast I couldn’t follow. One offered me a tiny woven bracelet—I fumbled my “thank you” in Vietnamese and she just smiled. Lunch was at a wooden house with smoke curling out of the kitchen window. Sticky rice, pork with mountain herbs, something sour and bright I can’t name. I still think about that meal when it rains at home.

After lunch we wandered into Ta Van village. It’s quieter there—less chatter from tourists, more dogs asleep on doorsteps. Linh told us how weddings used to last three days here (I asked if anyone still had the energy for that; she grinned). The sun came out for a minute and everything glowed—the fields, the river, even my muddy boots looked gold for a second. We took a car back up to Sapa after that, tired but sort of lighter too. There’s something about walking through someone else’s everyday that sticks with you longer than you expect.
