What’s included

Your day includes hotel pickup and drop-off from Dong Hoi or Phong Nha village, all entry fees for both caves, bottled water throughout the adventure, guidance from a local expert like Tuan who knows every story here, all taxes and handling charges taken care of—and a hearty Vietnamese lunch before heading back muddy but happy.

I nearly lost my nerve at the zipline. Standing there above the Chay River, harness digging into my hips, I could hear a group of Vietnamese teens cheering each other on — their laughter echoing off the limestone. Our guide, Tuan, just grinned and said “You’ll regret not trying!” so I went for it. The wind whipped past my ears and honestly, my heart was pounding so hard I barely noticed the view until I landed. And that was just getting to Dark Cave.

Earlier that morning we’d been picked up in Dong Hoi — early enough that the city was still stretching awake. It’s about an hour to Paradise Cave from there (Phong Nha village is closer), but somehow the time slipped by with Tuan telling us stories about how British explorers mapped these caves back in 2005. When we finally stepped inside Paradise Cave, it felt like walking into another world: cool air, the faint smell of earth and minerals, light bouncing off ancient stalactites. There were only a few other people around; it was quiet except for our footsteps crunching on the path.

Dark Cave is a whole different beast. First you zipline or kayak (I saw one guy opt for kayaking — he looked relieved), then swim across this shockingly cold stretch of water to reach the entrance. Inside it’s… well, dark. You get headlamps but even so, you feel every drip and squelch underfoot. The mud bath at the end was hilarious — everyone slipping around like kids at recess. My swimsuit still hasn’t fully recovered from that clay color.

Lunch was simple but good — rice, veggies, something grilled that tasted smoky-sweet. We ate outside with wet hair and muddy legs, swapping stories with another couple from Hanoi who’d come just for this day trip to Paradise Cave and Dark Cave. I keep thinking about how strange it felt to be deep underground one minute and out in blinding sunlight the next. It’s not polished or fancy but if you want a real adventure with a local guide (and don’t mind getting dirty), this is it.
