What’s included

Your day includes pickup and drop-off right at your Hanoi Old Quarter hotel by DCar limousine van, all entry tickets for temples and caves, cycling around Hoa Lu’s ancient capital with your English-speaking guide, a buffet lunch featuring Vietnamese dishes at a local restaurant (with plenty of options), bottled water along the way, plus both boating in Trang An and hiking up Mua Cave before heading back to Hanoi in comfort.

I barely had time to finish my coffee before the DCar van pulled up outside our Hanoi Old Quarter hotel. The seats were softer than I expected—someone joked it felt like business class on wheels. By the time we rolled into Ninh Binh, the city noise had faded into rice fields and mist. Our guide, Hien, handed out bikes at Hoa Lu and pointed out which temple belonged to which king—I kept mixing up Dinh and Le, but he didn’t seem to mind. The air smelled faintly of incense and wet stone. I tried saying “Dai Co Viet” but probably butchered it; Hien just grinned.

Lunch came next—buffet style at a local spot. I still remember the ginger in the chicken dish; it lingered longer than I thought it would. Then we were off to Trang An for the boat ride. I’d seen photos but didn’t expect how quiet it would feel gliding under those limestone arches. Our rower, an older woman with arms like ropes, laughed when someone tried to help paddle—she was much better at steering us through those caves than any of us could be. At one point inside a grotto, all you could hear was water dripping and someone’s camera clicking too loud.

Mua Cave was last—500 steps that looked steeper the closer you got. There was a breeze at the top that nearly knocked my hat off (should’ve tied my hair back). The view over Tam Coc is something I still think about when I’m stuck in traffic back home—patches of green fields and winding rivers way below. My legs were shaking on the way down but nobody seemed to care; even Hien admitted he usually stops halfway for a breather.
