“You know it’s funny,” our guide said as we shuffled out of the van near Trấn Quốc Pagoda, “most locals come here to clear their minds, not just for photos.” The lake was still that morning — barely a ripple, just the faint smell of incense and old stone. I tried to mimic how an older woman pressed her palms together before the Buddha statue, but my hands felt clumsy. Li, our guide, smiled and told me not to overthink it. She pointed out the bodhi tree — a gift from India ages ago — and I remember thinking how far stories can travel. There was this moment where all you could hear were birds and distant scooter horns. Kind of peaceful in a city that never really sleeps.

The drive to Rose Kitchen was quick but I kept glancing back at the pagoda’s red spire in the mirror. The villa itself is tucked away behind a gate you’d probably walk past if you didn’t know — bright tiles underfoot, someone’s grandma laughing in the kitchen (I think she was teasing us about our aprons). We picked what to cook: I went for bun cha because Li swore it’s what her dad orders every Friday. Chopping green mango for salad made my fingers sticky; fish sauce hit my nose sharp and sweet at once. At one point I tried to say “banh xeo” right and everyone cracked up — apparently my accent means “exploding pancake” instead of “sizzling.”

I didn’t expect the food to taste so different when you make it yourself. Lunch turned into this big table with bowls passed around, people clinking tiny glasses of homemade fruit wine (not bad actually), sharing stories about home. There was talk about how part of our booking helps fund meals for cancer patients and jobs for women from mountain villages — I liked knowing that just eating here meant something more than just filling up.

Afterwards we sipped egg coffee — thick and sweet like dessert — while someone played an old pop song on their phone in the corner. It felt like being let into a family secret for an afternoon. On the ride back through Hanoi’s Old Quarter, I caught myself already missing that kitchen warmth. Not sure if it was the food or just feeling quietly welcome for a few hours.
