You’ll ride in a rugged Jeep up East Zion’s mountain roads with a local guide, stopping for snacks and water along the way. At the summit, take in quiet views over Zion, Elkheart Mountains, and Coral Pink Sand Dunes—it’s colder than you think up there! Expect friendly company and time to just stand still above it all.
Hands gripping the edge of the seat, I watched our driver—Ben, born and raised in Utah—flick a crumb off his jacket before shifting the Jeep into gear. We’d barely left the gravel lot when he started pointing out ridges: “That’s Elkheart. You’ll see it better up top.” The air smelled dusty-sweet, like sage after rain. I kept thinking how different this was from hiking—less sweat, more time to look around and actually listen to stories.
The climb up to the summit took about an hour and a half, but it didn’t feel that long. Ben stopped once so we could stretch our legs (and so he could dig out some snacks—I grabbed trail mix but regretted not taking the weird local jerky). The wind at the top cut right through my coat, even though it was only October. My fingers went numb holding my phone for photos. Looking out over Zion and Coral Pink Sand Dunes from that height… I don’t know, it’s quieter than you’d expect. Everyone just sort of stood there for a minute, not talking. It wasn’t dramatic or anything—just still.
I tried to say thank you in Ben’s accent when we left (failed), but he grinned anyway. The drive back down felt smoother somehow—maybe because we’d all loosened up. If you’re looking for a day trip from Zion that isn’t just another hike, this Jeep tour is easy on your knees and still gets you those wide-open views people talk about. Bring gloves if it’s fall or winter though; trust me on that.
The tour takes about 1.5 hours climbing up to the summit plus return time.
You’ll see Zion from above, Elkheart Mountains, Coral Pink Sand Dunes, Cedar Mountain, and more.
Bottled water and snacks are provided during the tour.
It’s suitable for most fitness levels but not recommended for pregnant travelers or those with spinal or heart issues.
If traveling in fall or winter months, bring hats, gloves, coats—it can get cold at the summit.
The tour starts in East Zion area; check pickup details when booking.
Your day includes bottled water and snacks along the way as you ride in a rugged Jeep with a local guide who shares stories about East Zion and its surroundings before returning down from one of Southern Utah’s highest peaks.
