You step out of the van and it hits you — the air feels dry but not as harsh as I’d expected, and the rocks around Valley of Fire look almost fake in their color. Our guide, Maria, handed me a bottle of water before I could even ask (she must’ve seen my face). She pointed out some petroglyphs carved into the stone — I squinted to see them better, wishing I’d brought my glasses. The silence was weirdly loud; no slot machines or traffic, just wind and a couple of lizards darting past our boots.

We walked along one trail that twisted through these red sandstone walls — I kept touching the rock because it felt warm and sort of gritty, like holding onto summer. Maria told us stories about the people who lived here long before Nevada was even a word. There was this moment where we all just stood there looking out over the valley, nobody talking. I remember thinking how close we were to Las Vegas but how far away it felt at the same time. My shoes got dusty (should’ve worn darker socks) but honestly I didn’t care.

I tried to take a photo that would capture what it looked like — impossible. The light kept changing every time a cloud drifted by, so each picture came out different. Someone in our group made a joke about Mars and for a second it did feel like another planet. On the way back, everyone was quiet in that good way where you’re tired but happy you came. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
