The experience

The tour starts in Pioneer Square, where your guide walks you through the neighborhood's founding story and the native people of the area. From there you'll pass through the urban parks and streets that connect the early city: Waterfall Garden Park, where the Klondike Gold Rush left its mark, and the free Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, which tells how that rush shaped Seattle. You'll see the ornate Amtrak station and pass the stadiums of SODO before reaching the gate to Chinatown-International District, where the guide explains the layered history of Japan Town and Little Saigon alongside the neighborhood's Chinese roots.

The route then moves through downtown, passing Pike Place Market and some of the city's architectural landmarks: a defunct theater now undergoing renovation, galleries with their own complicated histories. You'll walk past the Wing Luke Museum without entering (entry is separate), and see how the city's neighborhoods connect on foot. The walking portion covers the ground steadily but at a manageable pace.

At Westlake Center, you board the historic monorail for the ride to Seattle Center, the site of the 1962 World's Fair. The monorail ticket is included. Once there, you walk the grounds and see the Space Needle, the Museum of Pop Culture, and the Pacific Science Center from the outside. Entry to any of these is your own choice and cost. The tour ends at KEXP, Seattle's independent radio station, where you can grab coffee (your own purchase), browse records, and watch DJs broadcasting live.
