The studio’s tucked just a block off the Plaza, up a creaky old staircase that smells faintly of oil paint and wood polish. Our instructor, Robbi, greeted us with a big grin and set out aprons, brushes, and thick white canvases. We started by getting our hands on the paints—literally. Robbi walked us through mixing colors (I never knew how much difference a dab of ochre makes), then showed us how to hold the brush for different strokes.
