Hop into a 4-person UTV and carve your own path through Sand Hollow’s wild dunes near St George. You’ll get local tips before heading out, pause for big views at Top of the World, and maybe cool off at Sand Hollow Reservoir — all with helmets and goggles included. It’s the kind of day you’ll remember long after you shake out the sand.
The first thing I noticed was the sound — that low, eager rumble of the UTV as we buckled in, helmets a bit loose on my head (I have a small one, apparently). Our guide at the lot, Mike, handed us goggles and pointed out the best way to hit Sand Mountain without getting stuck. “Don’t floor it on the soft stuff,” he grinned. I nodded like I understood, but honestly, I was just hoping not to embarrass myself in front of my cousin and her kids.
We set off into the red sand outside St George, Utah — it’s wild how quickly you leave behind pavement and suddenly you’re bouncing over dunes with nothing but blue sky and that weird salty smell from the desert air. The UTV felt solid even when we hit some rough patches near Warner Valley. At one point we stopped at this overlook called Top of the World; wind whipping our faces, sand sneaking into my shoes. The view stretched forever — I tried to take a photo but it didn’t really capture it. There was this silence up there too, except for someone laughing somewhere down below.
I didn’t expect to get so dusty or to laugh so much trying to pronounce “Glitter Mountain” in my best Utah accent (which is not good). We made a detour to Sand Hollow Reservoir — water looked almost fake against all that red rock. The kids wanted to swim so we just let them jump in with their clothes on. No one cared about wet seats after that. It’s funny how quickly you stop worrying about little things out here.
