Summary

Texas rodeo night with live music, family fun and BBQ

You’ll jump right into Texas rodeo culture near San Antonio—watch pro bull riding, cheer for barrel racers, laugh during mutton bustin’, then dance under string lights to live country music. Enjoy BBQ flavors in the air and friendly faces all around. It’s not just a show—it feels like being part of something local and lively.

experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed at Tejas Rodeo Company in Bulverde was the smell — that mix of hay, leather, and something smoky from the BBQ stands. We’d barely found our seats before the announcer’s voice boomed out over the covered arena, and suddenly there were longhorns parading past us, their horns wider than my arms could stretch. Kids were waving little flags, one cowboy tipped his hat to a group near us — I guess they were regulars because he grinned like he recognized them.

I didn’t expect to get so into it, honestly. Our local guide (she said her name was Maribel) explained all the events as they happened — team roping, barrel racing (the horses go so fast you feel it in your chest), and then bull riding. The crowd went wild every time someone managed to stay on for more than a few seconds. At one point during mutton bustin’, this tiny kid held on for dear life and everyone cheered like he’d won a medal. The air was thick with dust and excitement; I kept brushing grit off my jeans but didn’t really mind.

Afterwards, we wandered over to the pavilion where a country band was already tuning up under string lights. People kicked off their boots or just jumped right into two-stepping — I tried but mostly shuffled around awkwardly until someone showed me how to count the steps (still can’t do it right). The brisket sandwich I grabbed was messy but perfect, sweet sauce dripping onto my hand. There’s something about being surrounded by strangers who all seem to know each other’s names that makes you feel like you belong for a night. I still think about that view from the bleachers as dusk settled in — soft gold light on cowboy hats and kids chasing each other between picnic tables.
