You’ll feel your pulse jump as you tackle 17 major rapids on this Middle Ocoee River rafting trip in Tennessee. With a local guide leading your group, all safety gear provided, and transport from the outpost included, you’ll share laughter, splashes, and that unbeatable thrill of whitewater together. It’s more than just a day on the river—it sticks with you.
I didn’t expect my heart to be pounding before we even hit the water. The drive through Cherokee National Forest was already something—windows down, you could smell that sharp, green air and hear the river below us somewhere. Our guide, Marcus, cracked jokes about “Tennessee surfing” as we pulled up near the Ocoee #2 Dam. I’d never worn a helmet for anything except biking as a kid. The life jacket felt stiff at first but I got used to it fast.
We practiced paddling on dry land (I was definitely off-beat) and then suddenly we were in the raft, bobbing right above those first foamy waves. The Middle Ocoee is five miles of class III and IV whitewater—Marcus said it’s 90% whitewater, which sounded like an exaggeration until we hit rapid number two and got absolutely drenched. There were seventeen big rapids in total; I lost count after the fourth because I was too busy shouting and laughing. My cousin tried to high-five me with her paddle and nearly knocked herself overboard—Marcus just grinned like he’d seen it all before.
The forest closed in around us sometimes, all mossy rocks and sun slicing through leaves. Between rapids there were these weirdly quiet moments where you could hear birds or just your own breath catching up. I remember one stretch where everything smelled like wet earth and pine needles. By the end my arms were jelly but I swear I felt taller somehow—like braver? The bus ride back was a blur of soggy clothes and everyone swapping stories about who screamed loudest.
