You’ll race side-by-side on eight ziplines above Oahu’s North Shore, cross sky bridges over farmland, bounce up jungle trails by ATV with your local guide, and maybe even surprise yourself on a rappel or two. The views stick with you — so does that feeling right before you jump.
We were already bouncing along in the back of the ATV when I realized how far from Waikiki we’d come — red dirt flicking up around us, air thick with that green smell you only get after rain. Our guide, Kimo, grinned back at us and shouted something about “real island wind” as we crested a hill. I could see the Pacific flash through gaps in the trees. My hands were already a little sweaty just thinking about those eight ziplines ahead, especially after Kimo joked about “the long one.” (He wasn’t kidding.)
The first zipline was shorter than I expected — more of a warm-up, Kimo said — but my stomach still dropped out as soon as my feet left the platform. The harness pressed tight across my hips, wind roaring in my ears, and for a second it was just me and the sound of palm leaves slapping somewhere below. By the third line, I started to notice things: kids yelling from another group, the way salt hung in the air even this far inland, how everyone seemed to loosen up after that initial jolt of fear.
I didn’t expect to care much about the farm part of this Oahu zipline adventure, but walking across those sky bridges over banana trees (and whatever else was growing down there) felt oddly peaceful. Someone pointed out wild ginger — it smelled sharp and sweet at once — and then suddenly we were rappelling down a ridge while my legs shook like jelly. There’s a photo of me somewhere looking absolutely terrified; Li laughed so hard she almost dropped her helmet.
The last zipline is what I still think about: nearly half a mile long, high enough that you can see both mountain and ocean if you look sideways mid-flight (not sure if I blinked or held my breath). We landed laughing and a bit shaky. It’s weird how quickly three hours goes by when you’re busy not overthinking things.
The full tour lasts about 3 hours from start to finish.
