experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever wondered if waking up before the sun is really worth it? I did—especially on vacation. But there we were, shuffling out of the van in the dark near Diamond Head, half-awake and clutching bottled water. Our guide, Keoni, handed me a flashlight with a grin and said, “You’ll want this for the tunnel.” I didn’t expect to feel a little nervous about hiking in the dark, but honestly, it made everything feel kind of secret.

The trail isn’t long—just 1.5 miles—but parts get steep and my legs definitely noticed. There was this moment halfway up where you could smell damp earth mixed with salty air from the ocean below. Keoni pointed out old military bunkers along the way (I almost missed them), and we joked about how many steps it’d take to burn off last night’s poke bowl. The sky started turning pink behind us—so fast I nearly forgot to take photos.

At the top, everyone went quiet for a second. You can see all of Waikiki waking up—the city lights flickering out as sunlight spills over everything. I tried to say “Le’ahi” (the Hawaiian name for Diamond Head) and Keoni laughed at my pronunciation—he said it means “brow of the tuna,” which actually fits if you squint at the shape. The wind was chilly but felt good after the climb. Coming back down was easier; by then, people were already lining up at the base and I felt lucky we’d started early.
