What’s included

Boots thumping on the old wooden floor — that’s the first thing I noticed when we walked into the honky tonk on Broadway for our line dancing class. The lights were kind of soft, but you could hear laughter bouncing off the walls and smell something sweet and a little spicy from the bar downstairs. Our instructor, Jess, waved us over with this big grin like she already knew half of us. She made us all stand in a loose line (I was definitely not coordinated at first) and started clapping out a rhythm. There was zero pressure to get it right — just a lot of encouragement and “fake it til you make it” jokes. I didn’t expect to sweat so much in just an hour, but honestly, it felt good.

I kept messing up my grapevine step and this guy next to me — think cowboy hat, total tourist — whispered, “Don’t worry, nobody’s watching.” He was right; everyone was too busy laughing at themselves or trying to keep up with Jess’s calls. The music was loud enough to drown out my awkward stomps, which helped. At one point Jess told us these are dances you’ll see everywhere from Texas to Ohio, so you’re basically learning a party trick for life. We did two dances: one simple, one that made my brain work overtime (but somehow my feet followed). They filmed both for the souvenir video — I’m half-dreading seeing myself but also weirdly excited.

Afterwards we all stood around catching our breath and comparing who messed up more. Someone handed out bottled water (needed that), and Jess promised we’d get our videos in about two weeks. It’s funny how fast an hour goes when you’re moving together with strangers — there’s this feeling like you’re part of something local even if you’ve never danced before. I still think about that beat under my shoes and how easy it was to laugh at myself here in Nashville.
