You’ll walk through Malibu’s vineyards with a local guide who knows every turn and story on the land. See ancient Chumash cave paintings up close, wander past organic gardens, and finish your hike with estate wine to take home—plus those little moments you can’t plan for but remember later.
The first thing I noticed was the smell—sort of wild sage and sun-warmed earth, mixed with this faint sweetness from the vines. We’d barely started our hike in Malibu when our guide, Jamie, pointed out a hawk circling over the hills. She knew every plant by name (I forgot most of them immediately), but it made me pay more attention to the way the light hit the leaves. The path wasn’t tough, just a few uphill bits that got my heart going—nothing dramatic. My shoes got dusty fast, which felt right for a vineyard hike.
We stopped at these Chumash Native American cave paintings tucked into a little rock shelter. Jamie told us about the symbols—she said no one really knows what they all mean, which made it feel even more mysterious. The air inside was cooler, almost damp, and someone’s phone camera beeped too loud in the quiet. I tried to imagine people here hundreds of years ago, painting by firelight or whatever they had back then. It gave me chills for a second.
There was an organic garden too—rows of tomatoes and herbs that smelled like summer when you brushed past them. A couple picking chard waved at us; they looked like regulars. At the end of the loop (about 2.5 miles, but honestly it went by quick), we each got a bottle of Saddlerock Estate wine to take home. Not gonna lie—I opened mine as soon as I got back to my place and it tasted even better after that walk. If you’re looking for a day trip from LA with a bit of history and some good wine at the end...well, this is it.
