experience

What’s the experience like?

I didn’t actually expect to see a giant wooden Bigfoot before noon, but that’s how our Leavenworth day trip from Seattle started — with coffee in hand and a carved beast grinning down at us at the Espresso Chalet. Our driver-guide (I think his name was Mark? He had that dry Northwest humor) pointed out the “Harry and the Hendersons” filming spot, which made me laugh because my dad loved that movie. The smell of pine mixed with espresso steam is something I didn’t know I’d remember so clearly — it just stuck.

We crossed Lake Washington on one of those floating bridges you hear about (it really does feel odd), then zipped past Bellevue’s glass towers and Woodinville’s wineries. There was this moment near Monroe where the morning mist hung low over the fields — horses out by the fences, someone waving from a pickup truck. It felt like we were slipping between city and mountains without really noticing. Snacks appeared from somewhere in the van; I’m still not sure who brought them but nobody complained.

The drive up Stevens Pass got twisty, trees pressing close on both sides. Mark told us about old railroad ghosts and ski runs — he kept it light, nothing too rehearsed. We stopped for a quick walk at Deception Falls, which was louder than I expected and cold mist hit my face even standing back. My shoes got muddy (should’ve worn boots), but honestly it felt good to stretch out before hitting Leavenworth itself.

Leavenworth looks like someone dropped a Bavarian postcard in the Cascades — painted shutters, flower boxes everywhere, people carrying pretzels bigger than their heads. We had two hours for lunch and wandering; I ended up sharing sausages with a couple from Portland outside a beer hall (the mustard was way spicier than I thought). The Nutcracker Museum was weirder than I imagined — thousands of little faces staring back at you. On the drive back, everyone was quieter. I watched sunlight flicker through fir branches and tried to remember all the shop windows we’d passed. Still thinking about that first coffee under Bigfoot’s shadow.
