What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed stepping onto the dock was the salty breeze—cooler than I expected for a Hawaiian morning. Our captain, Kaleo, greeted us with a grin and handed out dry bags for our phones and sunscreen. The two Zodiacs looked like something out of an action movie—sleek, black, and built for speed. We climbed aboard “Ho'okahi,” settled in, and before I knew it we were skimming across the water, spray flying up at every turn.

Out past Poipu, the ocean opened up—deep blue stretching everywhere you looked. It didn’t take long before someone shouted and pointed: a humpback whale breaching off starboard. You could actually hear the slap of its tail echo over the waves. Kaleo cut the engine so we could listen; sure enough, there was that low, haunting song humming through the hull. A pod of spinner dolphins zipped by next—so close you could see their spots and hear them chattering if you leaned in. The kids onboard were wide-eyed; honestly, so was I.

This isn’t your average cruise—it’s fast-paced and bumpy at times (my hat nearly flew off twice), but that’s half the fun. The crew passed around bottled water and local snacks—macadamia nuts mostly—and shared stories about whale migration patterns and how these Zodiacs are modeled after Navy Seal boats for a reason. No snorkeling here; it’s all about staying topside and watching nature do its thing.
