You’ll ride out from Kanab on a guided UTV adventure across wild backcountry trails before stepping into the winding silence of Peekaboo Slot Canyon. Expect laughter with your local guide, cool stone walls brushing your fingers, and sunlight slicing down between towering red rock walls — plus bottled water to keep you going.
You’re just there — dust in your teeth, wind rushing past as the UTV jolts along these backcountry trails outside Kanab. Our guide, Jamie, grinned every time we hit a bump (I think he was showing off), and the way the red rocks glowed in that early light made me forget how nervous I’d been about the ride. It’s louder than I expected, but not in a bad way — more like you can feel the place in your chest. I caught a whiff of juniper when we stopped for water, sharp and sweet against all that sunbaked stone.
We pulled up at Peekaboo Slot Canyon’s mouth — it doesn’t look like much from outside, honestly. But then you step in, and it gets quiet fast. The walls shoot up on both sides, close enough that you brush them sometimes (they’re cool and gritty under your hand). Jamie pointed out some old markings — petroglyphs? — and told us stories about the people who used to pass through here. I tried to imagine walking this route without a trail or guide. Kind of humbling.
The hike itself is easy, more like wandering than trekking. Sunlight slices down in weird angles so sometimes you’re blinking into brightness, sometimes it’s almost chilly in the shade. We laughed when my friend tried to take a panorama photo but ended up with her own shoe three times in the shot. There’s something about being surrounded by those 100-foot walls that makes even grown-ups whisper for no reason. I still think about how small I felt — but not in a bad way.
