You’ll travel through Oak Creek Canyon, stand at quiet South Rim viewpoints, and shop for unique finds at Cameron Trading Post—all in one relaxed Arizona day trip.
Leaving Sedona just after sunrise, we wound our way up Oak Creek Canyon. The air was cool, and the scent of pine drifted in through the van windows. Our guide, Mike, pointed out a tiny roadside stand where locals sell prickly pear jelly—if you blink, you’ll miss it. The drive itself is a highlight, with red rocks glowing in the early light and switchbacks that make your stomach do a little flip.
Reaching the Grand Canyon’s South Rim, we stepped out into a quiet that’s hard to describe. It’s not silent—there’s wind, and sometimes you catch a raven’s call—but it’s different from anywhere else. Mike led us to a viewpoint away from the crowds. He shared stories about the canyon’s layers, and I could see tiny hikers on the Bright Angel Trail below, like ants. We had time to wander, snap photos, or just stand there, letting the scale of it all sink in. I grabbed a coffee from the little café near the rim; it wasn’t fancy, but it hit the spot.
After a few hours exploring, we headed east along the rim. The landscape changed—more junipers, fewer people. We stopped at Cameron Trading Post on Navajo land. Inside, shelves were stacked with turquoise jewelry, woven rugs, and a few quirky Route 66 souvenirs. I picked up a small sand painting as a keepsake. The fry bread from the café smelled amazing, and a couple of us couldn’t resist sharing one at our table. By late afternoon, we were back on the road, tired but happy, with red dust on our shoes and way too many photos on our phones.
If you’re leaving from Sedona, expect about 11 hours round-trip. From Flagstaff, it’s closer to 9 hours. Both include hotel pickup and drop-off.
Lunch isn’t included, but there are stops where you can grab food—like the café at Cameron Trading Post or near the canyon rim.
