You’ll sail Fort Lauderdale’s New River with a local captain who knows every story along the waterfront before heading out past Port Everglades into open Atlantic waters. Try steering under sail, relax up front with your own snacks (fridge onboard), or jump in for a swim if you feel bold. It’s easygoing and real — just sun, salt air, and good company.
“You ever seen a yacht with its own helicopter?” That’s what Captain Dan asked as we drifted past this insane house along the New River in Fort Lauderdale — I almost dropped my drink. The water was calm, but there was this low hum of engines from all the boats squeezing by. We’d just started our sailing charter, and already I felt like I’d landed in some movie about old Florida money. There was a salty smell mixing with something sweet from someone grilling nearby, and honestly, it made me hungry even though it wasn’t even noon yet.
Captain Dan’s got these stories — twenty years on these waters, he knows every twist in the river and who built which mansion (he points them out without sounding like a tour guide, more like a neighbor gossiping). Once we cleared Port Everglades and those cruise ships that look way too big to float, everything opened up. The Atlantic was just this huge blue sheet, wind picking up. If you want to try sailing yourself, he’ll let you take the wheel for a bit — I did, hands sweating on the rope while my friend tried not to laugh at how crooked we went. You can swim or snorkel too if you’re brave enough for that first cold splash.
I spent half an hour stretched out on a bean bag chair at the bow (never thought I’d say that), sun on my face and nothing but waves slapping against the hull. There were other folks on board — some celebrating an anniversary, one guy just reading quietly — but nobody felt crowded. It’s semi-private unless you call ahead for a private charter; honestly, sharing wasn’t weird at all. We brought snacks since there’s a fridge and plates and stuff onboard. Water’s included but next time I might pack something stronger…
By the time we turned back toward Fort Lauderdale, light bouncing off glassy condos along the shore, I realized how easy it is to forget everything else out here. Not sure if it was the breeze or just being away from traffic for once — either way, I still think about that view when I hear seagulls back home.
