What’s included

Your day includes a private 2.5-hour sail on Charleston Harbor with a local captain at the helm; bottled water for everyone; plastic champagne flutes and souvenir cups to take home; plus plenty of ice if you need it for your own drinks or snacks—just bring whatever you like along for the ride before heading back ashore together.

I almost dropped my drink when the captain pointed out Fort Sumter — I’d seen it in history books, but from the deck of Esprit de Joy, with the wind tugging at my hair and the sun dipping low behind the Ravenel Bridge, it felt different. There were six of us, all crammed onto cushioned benches, laughing too loud because we’d brought our own wine (BYOB is encouraged here) and maybe overdid it with the cheese board. Honestly, I thought I’d feel awkward at first, but Captain Mike just grinned and told us about his favorite church steeple in Charleston — St. Michael’s — which you can spot poking above everything else if you squint at the skyline.

The Battery looked almost unreal from out on the water. You know those old mansions with porches that seem to go on forever? They’re even prettier when you’re not dodging horse carriages or selfie sticks. The air smelled like salt and something sweet — maybe someone grilling nearby? At one point, Mike handed me a plastic champagne flute (classy!) and said we could keep them as souvenirs. Not sure mine survived my suitcase, but it made me laugh anyway.

We drifted past Castle Pinckney and then under the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge — which is way bigger up close than I expected. The whole time, Mike kept tossing out little facts about Charleston’s “Holy City” nickname and how St. Michael’s Church has survived more hurricanes than he has birthdays (his words). The light got gold and soft as we turned back toward shore; I remember wishing we could just keep floating a bit longer. There’s something about seeing Charleston from this angle that makes you feel like you belong there for a minute.
