You’ll jump into a Can-Am UTV with a local guide and cruise rocky trails most visitors never see on St. Thomas’ north side. Expect laughs over bumps, quick stops for photos above turquoise water, and stories from your guide along the way. Pickup is at Crown Bay Dock and all gear is included—you’ll just need your sense of adventure (and maybe sunglasses that stay put).
The first thing I noticed was the dust—fine, sun-warmed, sticking to my arms as we waited by the Crown Bay Dock in St. Thomas. Our guide, Marcus, handed out water bottles and grinned like he knew what was coming (he probably did). There were a few other folks in our group—some from New York, one couple from Atlanta—and everyone looked half excited, half nervous about the UTVs lined up under the palms. The engines had that low growl you feel in your chest before you even start moving.
I’d never driven a Can-Am before—honestly, I thought it’d be more like a golf cart. Nope. The first stretch was on public roads (which felt weird at first; I kept double-checking my seatbelt), then suddenly we were climbing into real island wildness. The air smelled green and sharp after last night’s rain, with pockets of sunlight flickering through the trees. Marcus waved us to a stop at this overlook—I think he called it “the north side’s secret balcony”—and I just sat there for a second trying to take it in. You could see blue water way below and hear birds arguing somewhere close by.
There were moments when the trail got rough—rocks under the tires, little jumps that made everyone laugh or yelp (I might’ve done both). At one point my sunglasses slid down my nose and I nearly lost them over a bump; Marcus saw me fumbling and just shook his head, said something about “rookies.” He told stories about growing up here—how his cousin once tried to race a goat up this same trail (the goat won). It felt less like a tour and more like tagging along with someone who actually knows these hills.
We didn’t get to swim—the timing didn’t work out—but honestly, I didn’t mind. My shoes were full of red dirt anyway. If you’re thinking about booking this St. Thomas UTV tour, bring closed-toe shoes and don’t wear anything white unless you want it tie-dyed with dust. I still think about that view from the top; sometimes it pops up when I’m stuck in traffic back home.
