Summary

Dubai’s wild dunes, camel rides, fire shows and endless colors

You’ll grip your seat during the dune drive, laugh on your first camel ride, try sandboarding (even if you wipe out), then relax under desert stars with live dance and fire shows plus an Arabic buffet dinner—all with local guides who make every moment feel real.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“You’ll want to hold on,” our driver grinned as we buckled up for the dune drive outside Dubai. I thought he was joking until the 4x4 started sliding sideways down a sand hill — my stomach dropped and everyone burst out laughing (except maybe me). The desert air smelled like warm dust and something sweet I couldn’t place. There was this weird silence between engine roars, just wind and the crunch of tires on sand. Our guide, Kareem, kept pointing out tracks — “fox last night,” he said. I wouldn’t have noticed anything but sand otherwise.

After that rush, we stopped for a camel ride. They’re taller than I expected — awkwardly graceful? The handler handed me the reins with a wink, and my camel made this low grumbling noise that felt oddly reassuring. Sandboarding looked easy when Kareem did it (spoiler: it’s not). I ended up with sand everywhere but didn’t care — there was a kind of freedom in just letting go. The sun started dipping behind the dunes then, making everything gold and orange. It’s hard to explain how quiet it gets out there.

Dinner happened under fairy lights at camp. The buffet had all these Arabic dishes—something with chickpeas and cinnamon I can’t pronounce but still crave now. A Tanura dancer spun so fast his skirt turned into a blur of color; later the fire show made everyone gasp (I definitely flinched when sparks flew close). Kareem sat with us after, telling stories about growing up near here. I remember thinking how different life must feel in this landscape—so open but somehow cozy at night. We drove back to Dubai full and sandy and tired in that good way you get after doing something new. Still think about that sky.
