I thought I’d be nervous about the dune bashing part, but honestly? Once our guide Kareem cranked up the 4x4 and we hit those Al-Lahab red dunes outside Dubai, I just started laughing. The sand looked almost pink in the late afternoon light. It’s hard to describe that feeling—like being on a rollercoaster but softer, warmer somehow. My friend kept yelling “again!” every time we slid down another slope. I think even Kareem was having fun by the end.

After about 45 minutes (I lost track), we stopped for photos right as the sun started to drop behind the dunes. There was this silence—just wind and a faint smell of cardamom from someone’s thermos nearby. We tried camel riding next; it’s bumpier than it looks, but the camels seemed patient with us city people. A local woman painted a quick henna design on my hand while I attempted some basic Arabic greetings (not well—she smiled politely anyway).

The desert camp felt like something out of an old movie—lanterns everywhere, cushions scattered around low tables. Dinner was better than I expected: grilled meats, salads with mint, lots of flatbread. The belly dancing and tanoura shows were lively; at one point during the fire show, sparks flew so close I could feel the heat on my face. Sitting there under a sky full of stars with shisha smoke curling around us… I still think about that view sometimes when city life gets loud again.
