experience

What’s the experience like?

The drive out of Dubai is always a bit of an adventure—especially early in the morning when the city’s glass towers catch that first bit of sun. We passed Jebel Ali Port (it’s massive, honestly hard to miss), then watched as the desert slowly gave way to Abu Dhabi’s modern skyline. Our guide, Ahmed, pointed out little things along the way—like how you can sometimes spot wild camels if you’re lucky (we didn’t this time, but maybe next!).

First stop: Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Even if you’ve seen photos, nothing really prepares you for stepping inside. The white marble almost glows under the sun and there’s this faint scent of incense in the air. I remember taking off my shoes and feeling the coolness of that huge Persian carpet underfoot—apparently it’s the largest hand-knotted one in the world. Ahmed shared stories about the mosque’s design and how it brings together different cultures; he even pointed out tiny details in the chandeliers I would’ve missed.

Afterwards, we cruised along the Corniche. The sea breeze was a relief—it gets pretty warm by midday—and you get these postcard views of Abu Dhabi’s skyline and Breakwater Island. Quick photo stop at Emirates Palace (the gold vending machine is real!), then a drive past Etihad Towers and the Presidential Palace gates. Lunch was at Al Asalah Restaurant inside Marina Mall—a proper buffet with everything from lamb stew to fresh salads. I ended up going back for seconds on their date pudding.

The afternoon had us wandering through Heritage Village (lots of crafts and old boats), then a quick stop at a local dates market where you can try samples—some are stuffed with nuts or rolled in coconut. The air smelled sweet and earthy here, totally different from anywhere else on the trip. Last stops were Yas Island for Ferrari World photos (that red roof is wild) and a peek at Louvre Abu Dhabi’s dome shining over Saadiyat Island before heading back to Dubai as sunset started to hit.
