What’s included

“Don’t worry, everyone says they’re hopeless at first,” our teacher grinned as she handed me a bundle of bright wool. I’d barely sat down at the loom before my hands started to fumble with the threads — honestly, I thought I’d just watch and sip tea. But no, you actually weave here. The room smelled faintly of strong tea and wool, and there was this low hum of conversation from the other side of the workshop. It felt like stepping out of Istanbul’s chaos for a while, just listening to stories about old carpets and how every pattern means something different — I kept forgetting which knot went where but our guide was patient (and didn’t laugh too hard when I tied one backwards).

There were only a handful of us — a French couple, two kids who mostly wanted more cookies, and me. The small group meant we all got attention (and help untangling our messes). Between sips of sweet Turkish tea and awkward attempts at pronouncing “halı kilim dokuma”, we heard little anecdotes about life in Turkey. At one point Li, another guest, tried to say something in Turkish and everyone burst out laughing — even the teacher wiped her eyes. Somehow that made it easier to relax and just enjoy messing up my first row.

I still think about the moment my fingers finally got the hang of it — that tiny click when the thread pulled tight and actually looked right. It’s not fast work; you settle into this slow rhythm while Istanbul buzzes outside. By the end, holding up my lopsided but very real piece of Turkish carpet (way better than a fridge magnet), I felt oddly proud. The teacher said it would bring luck if I put it near my door at home… so yeah, maybe I will.
