Summary

Fairy chimneys, cave churches and pottery in northern Cappadocia

You’ll wander through northern Cappadocia’s valleys with a small group and local guide, climb up Uchisar Castle for sweeping views, explore ancient cave churches at Göreme, try your hand at traditional pottery making in Avanos, and share a relaxed Turkish lunch — all with hotel pickup included. Expect laughter, odd-shaped rocks, and moments that linger longer than you’d think.

experience

What’s the experience like?

We were already bouncing along the road out of Göreme before I’d even finished my coffee — our guide, Cem, was cracking jokes about Turkish tea versus “tourist coffee” and pointing out how the morning sun hit Uchisar Castle. The rock looked almost pink, which I didn’t expect. We climbed up for the view (windy but worth it), and Cem told us stories about villagers who still remember playing hide-and-seek in those tunnels. I tried to picture it but mostly just felt the grit under my shoes and that weird sense of scale you only get in places like this.

The Göreme Open-Air Museum was next — honestly, the frescoes inside those old cave churches are more faded than the guidebooks show, but there’s something moving about seeing them up close. It smells a little damp in there, like stone after rain. Cem pointed out a patch of blue paint that’s survived centuries; he seemed genuinely proud. Lunch came sooner than I expected: lentil soup and some kind of stuffed pepper, everyone passing bread around like we’d known each other longer than an hour.

After that we wandered through Devrent Valley (Imagination Valley), where every rock looks like something else if you squint — I saw a camel, someone else swore they saw Napoleon’s hat. Paşabağ was full of kids clambering over fairy chimneys; it made me laugh remembering how Cem called them “mushroom rocks.” The last stop was a pottery workshop in Avanos. The clay felt cool and sticky under my fingers — I totally messed up my pot but the master just grinned and fixed it in two seconds flat. There’s something comforting about watching someone do what they’ve done their whole life.

I still think about that moment on the hill above Uchisar, wind tugging at my sleeves, trying to make sense of all those shapes in the valley below. You see pictures of Cappadocia everywhere but being there is different — messier maybe, more real somehow.
