If you’ve ever wanted to learn scuba diving in Phuket, this course is a solid choice. You’ll get hands-on practice in the pool, then explore two of the area’s best islands with clear water and loads of marine life—all with friendly instructors who know every trick in the book.
First thing I noticed at the pool in Chalong Bay was the faint smell of sunscreen mixing with the morning air. Our instructor, Lek, handed out gear and showed us how to set up everything—mask straps always seem trickier than they look. We practiced breathing underwater for the first time; it’s a weird but cool feeling, hearing only your own bubbles. Lek kept things light, joking about his own first dive nerves, which helped everyone relax. The water was a bit chilly at first, but you forget that once you’re focused on clearing your mask and finding your balance.
The next day, we caught a taxi just after sunrise—Phuket’s streets are quiet that early—and headed to the pier. The boat ride out to Racha Yai Island took about an hour. You can spot flying fish sometimes if you keep an eye out. Racha Yai’s water is so clear you can see the sandy bottom from the deck. Each dive lasted close to 50 minutes, and I remember seeing parrotfish nibbling on coral and a group of tiny clownfish darting around anemones. The current was gentle, perfect for beginners like us. Our guide pointed out a camouflaged scorpionfish—honestly, I’d have missed it without her.
On the last day, we sailed further to Racha Noi. It’s quieter here—no crowds, just the sound of water lapping against the boat and a few distant birds. Visibility underwater was unreal; you could see for what felt like forever. There were more open spaces and bigger schools of fish swirling around us. I felt a little nervous at first, but our instructor checked in often and made sure everyone was comfortable. By the end of the dive, floating above the reef felt almost natural.
No prior experience is needed—just basic swimming skills and comfort in water. The course starts with pool training before heading out to the islands.
