Our guide, Lek, handed out cold bottled water and grinned, “Fifteen minutes to paradise.” True enough: after a quick ride to the pier and a blast of salty wind on the speed boat, we reached Khai Nai Island before I’d even finished my coffee.

Khai Nai’s sand is almost white—soft underfoot, but not too hot yet. We dropped our towels near a little beach shack selling iced tea and wandered straight into the water. Fish darted around our ankles; you barely need a mask to spot them. Lek showed us how to feed them bits of bread—suddenly there were flashes of yellow and blue everywhere. The water was warm enough that you could stay in for ages without shivering. Last was Khai Nok Island—a bit busier with families and couples lounging under umbrellas. We grabbed some shade, watched kids chase crabs along the tide line, then took one last swim before heading back.
