Summary

Mountain air pagodas and village markets from chiang mai

You’ll feel crisp mountain air on your face as you stand at Thailand’s highest point, taste local flavors at a hilltribe lunch near Doi Inthanon, watch mist rise from Wachiratharn waterfall, and wander lively Hmong markets with your guide. The day lingers with you long after you’ve left those cool hills behind.

experience

What’s the experience like?

“Here, you can touch the sky,” our guide Bee grinned as we piled out of the minivan near the top of Doi Inthanon. I laughed because, honestly, my head was still spinning from the winding road up — but she wasn’t wrong. The air felt different up here, lighter and almost cold against my skin (I’m not used to needing a jacket in Thailand). We’d left Chiang Mai behind just after breakfast, the city still sleepy and pink with early light, and by mid-morning we were standing in front of Wachiratharn waterfall, voices drowned out by all that rushing water. The spray smelled faintly green — like moss and river stones — and my shoes got soaked when I tried to get closer for a photo. Worth it.

Bee led us through a Karen hilltribe village next. She waved at an old woman weaving outside her house; they chatted in Thai for a minute while we hovered awkwardly with our cameras. I felt weird about taking photos at first (the kids were curious but shy), but Bee explained how some families work with the Royal Project to sell their coffee beans and crafts. We bought tiny bags of dried fruit at the Hmong market — sweet, tart, sticky — and tried not to look too lost among all the bright vegetables and strange mushrooms I couldn’t name. The lunch stop was simple: rice, stir-fried greens, something spicy that made me cough (everyone laughed). It was good food after all that mountain air.

The highest point in Thailand is just a wooden sign surrounded by trees — nothing dramatic — but there’s this hush up there that surprised me. Maybe it’s just everyone catching their breath from the altitude or maybe it’s something else. On the way down we stopped at those twin pagodas built for the King and Queen; their gardens are so neat they almost don’t look real. Purple flowers everywhere, clouds drifting close enough you could almost reach out. And then Bee showed us which chedi belonged to whom (I mixed them up anyway), before we headed back toward Chiang Mai feeling kind of sun-dazed and quiet. I still think about that view sometimes when I’m stuck in city traffic.
