experience

What’s the experience like?

The morning air felt cool as we left Arusha just after 8am—our guide, Joseph, had already packed our picnic lunches and a stash of bottled water in the back. The drive itself was lively; you’ll pass small roadside fruit stalls and see kids waving as you head out toward Tarangire National Park. It’s about two hours on the road, but honestly, time slips by when you’re watching the scenery change from busy town to open bush.

Once inside the park, it’s impossible not to notice those huge baobab trees—some look like they’ve been there forever. We rolled down the windows and right away heard birds everywhere (Joseph pointed out a lilac-breasted roller perched on a branch). The real highlight? Elephants. Dozens of them—big herds crossing right in front of us, not bothered at all by our vehicle. At one point, I could hear them rustling through the dry grass and even catch that earthy smell you only get out here.

We stopped for lunch near a seasonal marsh—zebras and wildebeest grazed nearby while we ate our sandwiches. Lions are around too; Joseph spotted fresh tracks but said leopards are more shy (we didn’t see any this time). The open roof made it easy to take photos or just watch quietly as buffaloes moved past. By late afternoon, we’d covered a lot of ground before heading back to Arusha, tired but kind of wishing we could stay longer.
