What’s included

Your day includes private hotel pickup in Arusha, guided walks through Meru mountain villages with stories from your local host, hands-on bean-to-cup coffee roasting on a family farm, tastings of local spices and banana wine, a generous farm-to-table lunch prepared by community women under avocado trees, time to swim or relax at a quiet hidden waterfall surrounded by forest sounds—not crowds—and ends with panoramic views over Arusha before heading back in comfort.

“Try this—don’t worry, it’s not too strong!” That’s what Mama Joyce said as she handed me a cup of banana wine in her yard just outside Arusha. I’d already lost track of how many different smells drifted through the air—wood smoke from the kitchen hut, something sweet and green from the groves we’d walked through earlier. Our guide Daniel had just finished showing us how his family’s biogas tank worked (I’ll admit I never thought cow manure could be that interesting), and then he pointed out the stingless bee hives hanging in the shade. He laughed when I tried to say “asante sana” properly—my Swahili is hopeless.

The whole morning felt like a slow unraveling of little surprises. We wandered past kids chasing chickens, women carrying baskets on their heads without even wobbling. Daniel stopped every few minutes to show us some plant or tell a story about his grandfather’s coffee trees—he even let us help pick a few cherries before roasting them over an open fire. The smell was earthy and sharp at first, but mellowed as we ground the beans together. I still think about that first sip—hot, smoky, nothing like what I drink at home.

Lunch was under a big avocado tree, plates piled with banana stew and vegetables grown right there. There was this easy laughter between the women who cooked for us—even when they teased each other about who made the best ugali. After eating (way too much), we took a short drive up into thicker forest where you could hear water before you saw it. The waterfall wasn’t huge but it was totally empty except for us—just cold spray and mossy rocks and sunlight flickering through leaves. I didn’t last long in the water (it’s freezing!), but just sitting there listening to nothing but birds felt like such a reset.

On the way back toward Arusha we stopped at this viewpoint where you can see all the way across the savannah—someone had rigged up a swing between two trees so you could just float above everything for a minute or two. Kilimanjaro was hiding behind clouds that day, but honestly I didn’t mind. It was one of those days that doesn’t feel rushed or staged—you just sort of fall into step with village life for a while and forget about your phone.
