What’s the experience like?

Salt air hit me as soon as we stepped out near the water’s edge in Kenting. The sun was already warming up the rocks, and you could hear the faint chatter from other groups getting ready. Our instructor—Mr. Lin—handed out gear and checked each mask for a snug fit, making sure no one felt rushed or awkward. I liked that he kept things light, joking about how everyone looks funny in a wetsuit. The group was small, just four of us, so it never felt crowded or overwhelming.

After a quick intro on land (about 10 minutes), we practiced breathing through the snorkel and got used to the fins. The water was clearer than I expected—almost glassy that morning—and once we slid in, I could see tiny fish darting around right away. Mr. Lin pointed out a bright blue parrotfish and even snapped a few underwater photos while we floated above the coral. He kept checking on us, making sure nobody drifted too far or got nervous. I remember the coolness of the water on my face and the odd tickle from seaweed brushing past my arm.

We spent about half an hour exploring before heading back in, where they handed us towels and let us look through the photos on a tablet—some were hilarious, honestly. Before leaving, they gave us little certificates with our names on them, which felt like a nice touch (my nephew immediately showed his off).
