experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed was the way the sun hit the old fishing shacks along Rodney Bay — nets draped everywhere, a couple of guys waving as we rolled up in the van. Our guide, Li, handed out helmets and grinned like he’d seen every nervous tourist before. I’d never been on a Segway before (honestly thought I’d fall off), but after five minutes wobbling around the lot, it felt weirdly natural. The air smelled like salt and something sweet from a bakery nearby. We set off behind Li, who kept tossing facts over his shoulder about pirates and how this whole bay used to be their hideout — hard to picture with all the beach bars now.

The trail wound up Mount Pimard — not too steep, but enough that you could feel the breeze change as we climbed. At one point we stopped by an old stone ruin half-swallowed by vines. Li told us it was from some sugar estate ages ago; I touched the wall and it was cool even in the heat. There was this moment where everyone just went quiet for a second, listening to birds and distant reggae from someone’s radio down below. Later we rolled past a hillside gazebo (Li called it “the best view nobody knows about”) and then down to a pond where tiny fish darted around our shadows.

I didn’t expect to laugh so much trying fresh guava at the fruit stop — sticky hands, juice everywhere, Li laughing at my attempt to say “thank you” in Creole (I definitely butchered it). The Segways zipped past rum shops painted every color you can imagine; locals sitting outside nodded or shouted hello. It felt less like a tour and more like being let in on some inside joke of island life. By the time we circled back toward Reduit Beach, my legs were buzzing but I kind of wished it wasn’t over yet.
