You’ll push yourself hiking up Mount Liamuiga’s rainforest trails with a local guide, hear monkey calls in the trees, learn bits of island history on the way up, and catch wild views from St. Kitts’ highest point before heading back tired but happy.
I’ll be honest — I signed up for the Mount Liamuiga volcano hike in St. Kitts mostly out of curiosity (and maybe to prove something to myself). The drive from my hotel was already a little adventure; our guide, Devon, pointed out old sugar estates and a “free village” where descendants of freed slaves live. He waved at nearly everyone we passed — people here actually do that. The air got cooler as we climbed, and I could smell wet earth before we even started walking.
The first part of the trail was all tangled roots and thick green shadows. Devon kept stopping to show us wild orchids or these giant ferns — he called them “monkey umbrellas.” We heard Vervet monkeys somewhere above us, but I only caught a flash of grey tail. There were birds too, but honestly, I mostly remember the sound of my own breathing after about an hour. It’s not an easy hike (they weren’t kidding), but somehow Devon’s jokes about his “Caribbean gym” made it feel lighter.
Reaching the crater edge was… well, I still think about that view sometimes. The clouds moved so fast over the rim you’d get sun one second and mist the next. Devon handed out this sweet energy drink — tasted like guava or something — while we just stood there staring into that deep green bowl below. Someone tried to spot Nevis across the water but got distracted by a hawk circling over the caldera. My legs were jelly but in that good way, you know?
The walk back down felt different — lighter somehow, maybe because we’d done it. A couple of us swapped stories about hikes back home (none with monkeys though). When we finally reached the van again, I noticed my shirt was streaked with mud and didn’t even care. The mountain air clung to everything; it took me hours to really come down from it.
This is a challenging hike with steep sections; participants should be physically fit and prepared for uneven terrain.
