What’s included

Your day includes private transportation with pickup from your hotel in Ella, services of an experienced local guide who knows every shortcut and story along the way, all entry fees covered so you don’t have to worry about tickets or cash at each stop, plenty of bottled water and snacks handed out during breaks (trust me—you’ll want them), plus a relaxed Sri Lankan lunch before heading back tired but happy.

We started our Ella 5 Icons day tour just after sunrise—still kind of sleepy, but the air was cool and smelled faintly of wet earth from last night’s rain. Our guide, Saman, handed out bottled water and grinned when he saw my shoes (not ideal for hiking, as I’d soon find out). The hike up Ella Rock was tougher than I thought—mud squelching underfoot, mist curling around the tea bushes. At one point we passed a tiny stall where an old woman poured us sweet black tea; honestly, that cup tasted better than anything I’ve had back home. Saman pointed out birds I’d never seen before—one flashed blue through the trees—and told stories about his childhood in these hills. My legs were burning by the time we reached the top, but standing there with clouds drifting below us… it’s hard to explain. You just feel small and lucky at the same time.

After climbing down (my knees complained), we drove to Ravana Falls. The water was lower than usual—Saman said it’s much wilder during monsoon—but still loud enough to drown out any thoughts for a minute or two. There were families picnicking nearby, kids laughing and splashing each other. We grabbed some snacks (fried lentil things—can’t remember the name) before heading on to the Nine Arch Bridge. The bridge really does look unreal up close; old stone arches against a wall of green forest. We waited with a handful of locals for the train to pass—it finally did, slow and noisy, everyone waving like we were all in on some secret.

The last stretch took us through more tea fields towards Little Adam’s Peak. It’s not massive but you do have to work for those views—my shirt stuck to my back by then but I didn’t care anymore. At the top you can turn in every direction and see nothing but hills rolling away into haze; Saman joked that you could spot Kandy if your eyesight was good enough (mine definitely isn’t). On the way back we stopped at Demodara Loop station just as another train disappeared into its spiral tunnel underneath us—I tried to take a video but mostly got my own thumb.

I didn’t expect to end up so tired or so quiet at lunch—a simple curry spread laid out at a little spot Saman knew—but something about eating together after all that walking made it feel special. Even now I can almost smell those spices when I think about Ella. If you’re thinking about this day trip from Ella with a local guide… well, just wear better shoes than I did.
