experience

What’s the experience like?

The first thing that hit me was the mix of old and new—one minute we were weaving past tuk-tuks near the Gangaramaya Temple, next we were standing under the shade of huge banyan trees. Our guide, Sanjeewa, pointed out tiny Buddha statues tucked into corners I’d never have noticed. The temple’s incense hung in the air, and you could hear bells echoing over the chatter outside.

Pettah Market was a whole different world. It’s loud, colorful, and smells like spices and ripe mangoes. We squeezed through narrow lanes packed with vendors selling everything from phone chargers to gold bangles. I grabbed a quick cup of ginger tea from a guy on Second Cross Street—he said he’s been here for 20 years.

Later, we strolled along Galle Face Green just as the sun started dipping. Families flew kites and kids chased after street food carts. There was this salty breeze coming off the sea—felt good after the heat in Pettah. We even tried saffron cake with herbal tea at a tiny café nearby (it’s included!).

We made short stops at Viharamahadevi Park and the old Parliament building too—both felt calm compared to the market buzz. The whole tour moved at an easy pace; never rushed, but we saw so much more than I expected in just a few hours.
