What’s the experience like?

The first thing I noticed stepping out near the school was the salty breeze—warm, but not too much, just enough to wake you up. Our instructor, Diego, greeted us with a grin and a quick rundown of what to expect. He handed out wetsuits that still smelled faintly of the ocean and sunscreen (I’d forgotten mine, but he had extra). The boards were lined up outside, waxed and ready. You could hear the gulls squabbling overhead while we squeezed into our gear.

We piled into their van—six of us, all a bit nervous—and drove just ten minutes to a spot Diego called “the mellow break.” He explained why this beach works for beginners: soft sand underfoot, gentle waves rolling in sets.
