Summary

Walk Soweto’s past, meet locals, taste kota and ride the taxi

You’ll walk Soweto’s historic streets with a local guide, hear stories at the Hector Pieterson Memorial, step inside Mandela House, share laughs over kota lunch, then ride a minibus taxi to see daily life up close in Nomzamo Park. Expect small surprises—like warm bread or music on the taxi—and moments that stay with you long after.

experience

What’s the experience like?

I felt a weird mix of nerves and curiosity standing by the Hector Pieterson Memorial that morning in Soweto. Our guide, Sizwe, didn’t rush us—he just let us take in the quiet for a minute before he started talking about the 1976 uprising. I could smell someone grilling corn nearby (sweet and smoky), and there was this low hum from school kids passing by. Sizwe pointed out where students had gathered, his voice soft but steady—he said his aunt had marched here too. That made it all feel closer somehow.

We walked down Moema Street together, tracing the same route those students took. The sun was sharp on my neck but the street itself felt heavy with memory. There were murals everywhere—some faded, some bright—and Sizwe kept stopping to show us things I’d have missed: a cracked wall with bullet holes, a woman selling fat cakes who waved at us (I tried one; still warm). When we got to Vilakazi Street, I honestly didn’t expect how small Mandela’s house would look from outside. Inside was even more cramped—photos on the walls, old chairs. Twenty minutes wasn’t enough but maybe that’s just how these places are.

Desmond Tutu’s house is just up the road—a quick stop but you feel the weight of it. After that we sat down for lunch at a tiny shop where they served us kota (like a burger but way better). The bread was soft and greasy in my hands, filled with chips and sausage—I probably made a mess of myself eating it but nobody cared. Sizwe laughed when I tried to say “ngiyabonga” (thank you) in Zulu—definitely butchered it.

After lunch we squeezed into a minibus taxi headed for Orlando East. The radio blasted amapiano beats so loud you could feel them in your chest. At Nomzamo Park informal settlement, kids ran beside us shouting hello and trying to get high-fives through the window. It was noisy and raw and honestly kind of beautiful in its own way—I still think about that view from the corner of the street where everything seemed both chaotic and full of life.
