If you’re after something different near Cape Town, this quad bike ride through Atlantis Dunes is pure fun—easy to learn, safe for families, and packed with epic scenery (Table Mountain really does steal the show). You’ll come away sandy but smiling.
Sand gets everywhere—between your fingers, in your shoes, even in your hair if you’re not careful. That’s the first thing I noticed when we rolled up to the edge of the Atlantis Dunes, just north of Cape Town. The wind was picking up a bit, carrying that salty tang from the ocean and making the dunes look like rolling waves frozen in time. Our guide, Sipho, handed out helmets and gave us a quick rundown on handling the quad bikes—nothing too technical, just enough so you don’t end up stuck halfway up a dune.
The first few minutes felt wobbly, but once you get used to the throttle, it’s honestly addictive. We zigzagged over soft white sand, following tracks left by earlier riders. Every now and then Sipho would stop us for a breather and point out Table Mountain in the distance—on clear days it looks almost unreal against the sky. There’s this one spot he called “Instagram Hill”—the view is wild and everyone pulls out their phones for a shot. You’ll probably want to do the same.
Nope! The guide gives a full intro before you start and keeps things relaxed. Beginners are totally welcome.
Yes—this is family-friendly as long as everyone meets the minimum age and height requirements for safety.
Closed shoes are best (sandals fill up fast), comfy clothes you don’t mind getting sandy, and maybe sunglasses for glare.
This tour isn’t recommended if you’re pregnant or have spinal or heart issues. If unsure, check with your doctor first.
Your quad bike ride includes all safety gear (helmet and goggles) plus guidance from an experienced local who knows these dunes inside out. Just bring yourself—and maybe a camera for those Table Mountain shots!
