We’d barely had coffee when our driver, Sipho, pulled up outside our place in Cape Town—right on time, but I still felt half-asleep. The city was just waking up too. First stop: Bo-Kaap. I’d seen photos, but the real thing is louder—shouting pinks and greens and blues, all these houses stacked along cobbled streets. Our group wandered around while Sipho told us about Cape Malay history (he grew up nearby; you could tell he loved this bit). Someone was frying onions somewhere—spicy-sweet smell drifting out a window. I tried to say “salaam” to a shop owner; she grinned and corrected my pronunciation with a laugh.

After that it was all coastline—Camps Bay’s palm trees flickering past the window, then stopping at Hout Bay where some folks took the Seal Island boat (I skipped it and just watched gulls fighting over chips). Chapman’s Peak Drive is as dramatic as everyone says, but it’s also quieter than I expected—just wind and ocean below those cliffs. At one point we pulled over for photos and nobody said anything for a minute; even Sipho went quiet. There’s something about that view that makes you shut up.

Boulders Beach was next—the main reason I booked this day trip from Cape Town, honestly. Penguins everywhere: waddling between rocks, arguing on the sand, ignoring us completely. The boardwalk gets you close enough to hear their weird braying calls (someone said they sound like donkeys; not wrong). Lunch was fish and chips in Simon’s Town—greasy fingers, salty air—and then on to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve. There’s this old wooden sign everyone lines up to pose with; we did too, but I liked climbing around the rocks more. The wind at Cape Point nearly knocked my hat off.

I’m not sure what I expected from seeing “where two oceans meet”—it’s not marked by fireworks or anything—but standing there with spray on my face felt big somehow. On the way back we stopped at St James Beach for those candy-colored cabanas (good for one last photo). By drop-off time I was sunburnt and tired in that good way you get after a long day outside.
