experience

What’s the experience like?

Ever tried to cross Place de l’Indépendance on a bike at 9am? I hadn’t, and honestly, my heart was racing more than my legs. Our guide—Moussa, who switched between French and English like it was nothing—waved us through the traffic with this easy confidence. The city felt alive in every direction: horns somewhere behind us, the smell of fresh bread from a street vendor, sunlight bouncing off old colonial facades. I kept thinking, “So this is Dakar up close.”

We stopped at La Porte du Troisième millénaire first. Moussa explained how it’s meant to symbolize Senegal stepping into the new millennium. I’ll admit, I didn’t expect to feel much standing in front of a modern monument—but there was something about the sea breeze and the way locals paused for photos that made it feel important. My jersey stuck to my back (it gets humid fast), but the snack break came just in time. Peanuts never tasted so good.

The route wound past the Presidency and then down toward the ferry terminal for Gorée Island—just seeing people waiting for the boat made me want to come back another day. There was this quick moment where we all just stood quietly looking out at the water; not sure why that stuck with me. Later, we rolled up to the Pan-African museum—its round shape kind of surprised me—and an on-site guide took over from Moussa for that last bit. I still think about some of those art pieces.
