experience

What’s the experience like?

The alarm went off at 4:30 am—honestly, I barely slept from the excitement. By 5, we were already rolling out of Kigali, the city still dark and quiet, heading north on that winding 112 km drive to Volcanoes National Park. The air smelled fresh, almost earthy, as we passed tiny roadside stalls just opening up. We made a quick stop near Musanze for coffee—Rwandan beans, strong and smoky, just what I needed before the trek.

At Kinigi Village, right by the park headquarters, our group gathered around the ranger for a briefing. He was direct but friendly, making sure we knew the drill: keep your distance, no sudden moves, and always listen to your guide. They split us into small groups, each with its own ranger and tracker. The forest was thick and damp, and my boots squelched with every step. Sometimes you’d hear nothing but your own breath and the odd bird call—then suddenly, there they were. The first glimpse of the silverback, chest broad and calm, just sitting there while the younger ones tumbled around him. You could hear them munching on bamboo shoots, see mothers cradling their babies, and every so often, the silverback would look up, almost sizing us up before going back to his business. The whole trek can take anywhere from an hour to several, depending on where the gorillas moved overnight. It’s tough going at times—muddy, steep—but honestly, you forget all that once you’re face-to-face with these gentle giants.
